about

In 2001 the Banks were promoting online access and branches were closing down all over the country . At the same time the nearby town of Diamond Creek was rallying to stop McDonald's opening a store in their quiet little outer North East of Melbourne piece of paradise. They not only lost the petition but their banks as well. This song ponders the result of that battle.

A Live Recording of Garry on Acoustic Guitar & Vocal, from my 2003 CD - Beating Round The Bush.

Coming To A Town Near You . . .© G Hayes 2001

Ch1:
They’ve replaced our bank with a fast food chain
No long term interest just short term gain

Diamond Creek - is the township for this tale
North East of Melbourne on one lonely rail track,
heading for Hurstbridge. We’re promised another
track that is - to avoid burnin’ rubber

It’s not quite the end of the line just yet
But the banks are deserting us- only one left
In providing a service they see no profit
Just raise each fee, but rarely drop it
Re Ch1

I was a NAB customer at Diamond Creek
or Warrandyte every other week
They closed that down, said that my new branch
Was Doncaster - half an hour away - NO CHANCE

Now Diamond Creeks gone it’s a longer trip
Greensborough, well they say that’s it
Soon there’ll be one branch in this whole damn state
Melbourne Central - Is that our fate?

Ch2:
They’ve replaced our bank with a fast food chain
No long term interest just short term gain
There’s money in making us overweight
While the bank fees continue to escalate

But let’s consider our brand new Macca's
Sure to drive the other food shops crackers
When these close down we’ll all be fed
A standardized burger, with plastic bread

One giant moves out, while another moves in
Strategic profits, they think it’s no sin
Shareholders are the God they obey
While the locals grow poorer - day by day
Re Ch2

What could be the answer to this common affair
Support local traders then - we all share
The profits might stay in our community
Not with the Macca’s and the NAB.
Re Ch2

NOT with the Macca’s and the NAB.
The profits must stay in our community
